What we're building.

Three projects that turn District 2's employers, partners and public land into opportunity for the people who live here.

01 · Workforce

Pathways to Prosperity

Status: Proposed — led by the Montgomery County Commission

A career pipeline from K–12 through Trenholm State Community College and into high-demand jobs in healthcare, advanced manufacturing, IT and the skilled trades.

How it works

Dual enrollment and industry certifications while students are still in high school

Internships, apprenticeships and job shadowing with local employers

Transportation, meals, stipends and career counseling so cost isn't the barrier

Career fairs, parent workshops and an industry advisory board

Partners: Montgomery County Commission (lead), Trenholm State Community College, Montgomery Public Schools, the State Legislature, and the Mayor of Montgomery.

Goals within two years

20% more students in dual enrollment or career-tech programs

60% of participants earning an industry-recognized credential before graduation

70% of completers working in their field within six months

Budget: about $735,000 a year, from workforce grants, industry partners and foundations.

02 · Health

Live HealthSmart Alabama in District 2

Status: Planned launch 2027, in partnership with UAB

Live HealthSmart Alabama is a UAB Grand Challenge working to make healthy living simpler in communities where chronic disease hits hardest. Commissioner Moore-Zeigler is working to bring it to District 2, building on UAB's work in Birmingham neighborhoods and its first expansion to Selma.

Healthy eating

Fresh, affordable food closer to home, like UAB's Mobile Market.

Prevention and wellness

Screenings and connections to care.

Physical activity

Safe places to walk and move, including the new Elton N. Dean Sr. Park trail.

Education

Health classes and resources for families.

03 · Recreation

Elton N. Dean Sr. Park

Status: Trail construction under contract (awarded February 2026); expansion planning underway

Commissioner Moore-Zeigler moved the ALDOT funding agreements for the park's new off-road trail and multi-use path in 2024. Design was completed and construction awarded in February 2026. The trail is the first step toward a bigger, better park for District 2 families.
